Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in the body. Sprains usually occur as a result of uneven ground; twisting motions with the foot planted awkwardly, abnormal forces applied to the joint, during any physical activity or sports, or even during regular daily activities.
The most common ankle sprain is an inversion ankle sprain which occurs when the foot is inverted too much. Abnormal stresses are placed on the supporting muscles and tears or partial tears occur in the ligaments on the lateral side of the ankle. See the section on Ligament Sprains for more information and treatment options.
