Jumpers knee is a specific type of tendonopathy associated with the patellar tendon. The patellar tendon connects the inferior pole of the patella (kneecap) to the tibial tuberosity on the tibia (lower leg).
It primarily occurs in athletes who are involved in jumping sports such as basketball or volleyball but can happen to anyone. Patients usually complain of anterior knee pain in the tendon itself that is a dull ache. It is commonly an overuse injury from repetitive overloading of the extensor mechanism of the knee. Please see the Tendonitis/Tendonopathy section for further information on tendon injuries and treatment.
